THE FIRST STEPS ON THE PATH OF YOGA LIFE

It is our aim at Swara Yoga Academy that all students of the 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training gain an intuitive knowledge of yoga methods and practices. We have a special method of teaching, which students gain knowledge through direct experience.

Our approach to teaching is more intuitive than informational, more feeling than thinking. Knowledge and experience lead to wisdom; students not only learn about the practices of yoga, but more importantly students learn about themselves and the yoga through direct experience.

From this foundation, yoga teaches us about the flow and grace of life. Yoga means ‘connection’ and the most important thing you can learn is how to connect what happens on the mat with what happens off the mat. It’s “The Yoga of Everyday Living”. This kind of yoga can then open the way for intelligent and intuitive teaching.

The 200 Hour Course in Detail:

The Foundations

We believe that a quality yoga practice is built on a grounded, solid understanding of the core principles of yoga practice. These core principles are actually the essence of life itself, so as we learn about yoga, we learn about life.

Our trainings begin slowly by creating a stable structure that is accessible  to all students, regardless of  ability or experience. At first we concentrate on the alignment of the postures and the cultivation of breath. Students get plenty of individual attention, and receive ongoing alignment adjustment within the morning asana practice so that they can refine the quality and longevity of their own poses. These early stages of the course also build the physical strength and flexibility required to move toward more complex expressions of asana with ease and safety.

Postures and Alignment

It is vital for everyone to have a clear  knowledge of the foundations of asana alignment and sequencing, and how to modify each posture to suit individual students.  Regardless of the level of experience, all participants benefit from our detailed and fascinating look at the essence of the postures.

You will learn how to modify and prop postures so that students can practice well and avoid injury and strain. It is only through quality practice will postures evolve and improve. Each person has different needs, so students will learn how to address the needs of individuals.

Pranayama and Breath

The Breathwork is one of the essential part of the foundation practices. Breath is a major focus of the course and is cultivated daily through our unique Swara Yoga breath system.

This system teaches a full scope of Pranayama techniques, and also begins with the essentials of the practice. We pride ourselves on delivering the very best training in Pranayama available in a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training Course.

Students will learn how to guide and cultivate breath in classes and will understand the energetics of the breath and the effects of the techniques. One of the unique features of our Swara Yoga Breathing method is how easy it is to practice. Students of any level can gain access to breath practice with our system.

The Schedule

One of our priorities is what we call ‘sustainable yoga’. Instead of leaving you exhausted after a month of yoga, we have created a programme that students feel amazing and full of energy after the month. We have learned this after many years of running 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training courses.

07:00-08:00:  Swara, Pranayama & Meditation

08:15-10:00:   Asana Class

10:00-11:00:   Breakfast break

11:00-12.30:    Yoga Theory and Philosophy Discussion

12:30-15.30:   Lunch, Rest and Beach Break

15:30-17.30:   Asana Workshop and Teaching Practice

17:45-19.00:   Yoga Nidra, Yin Yoga and or Slow Flow

Meditation

Our day begins and ends with meditation. Meditation is an essential part of a comprehensive yoga practice and is also essential for personal growth. The course explores a variety of accessible and powerful meditation techniques to develop inner calm, insight, clarity and wisdom.

Many of our meditations are based on the 5 Essentials of Life: Stability, Flow, Intensity, Movement and Space. Other techniques are also utilized such as those based on witnessing, visualization or using sounds such as mantras. These meditations source from the lineages of traditional Tantra, Buddhism & Taoism. Some meditations are active, some seated, and we offer regular practice of Yoga Nidra for deep restoration.

Our Movement Style

We generally practice with a ‘Slow Flow’ Vinyasa style of asana, which is based on alignment, awareness and breath. We practice ‘sustainable yoga’ and we begin our trainings with practice which gradually builds the strength and flexibility required to approach challenging postures.

Students are expected to guide their own development by practicing at the intensity level that suits them. In this way, students learn how to take care of themselves and listen to their own inner wisdom, instead of just taking orders from a teacher. The activation of inner wisdom is one of the primary goals of our program. It takes intelligence from the practitioner to know when it is appropriate to work intensely and when it is right to rest, in order to maximize the benefits of their practice, building energy & vitality and avoiding injury and burnout.

Our movement style is often appreciated by dancers and other movement lovers, as there is lots of room for personal expression and flowing shapes. In a sense, the practice is a dance.

Advanced Practice

The more intense and challenging postures such as headstand, backbends and arm balances are also explored in depth. We teach a step-by-step process so that students can develop postures that may be currently beyond their ability, but will become accessible if they follow the stages building up to the asana. This step-by-step method helps students understand the steps necessary to progress. This is useful both for personal practice and for teaching others how to get into poses. We provide a printed asana manual which includes this step by step process of over 100 yoga asanas as a teaching and study guide.

Philosophy and Discussion

Each day includes a discussion of yoga philosophy, energetics  & practices. These classes address the foundations of yoga and include texts such as the Yoga Sutras & Hatha Yoga Pradipika. We also use these open sessions to discuss in detail the physical & energetic practices of yoga, giving students the opportunity to share and ask questions relating to their practice.

As yoga philosophy can often come across as dense and complicated, we tend to keep the content of these lectures quite simple (but profound) so that all students grasp the core content in a way which is relevant to their own practice, teaching and daily life.

Throughout the course, these classes also expand to cover a broad scope of topics including; yoga history, meditation, traditional Tantra traditions, yoga as a spiritual path, Ayurvedic medicine, Jyotish (Indian Astrology) and much more. We reference these systems in relation to their ‘practical wisdom’, the intuitive and intelligent wisdom which relates to the yoga of everyday life. We offer small tastes of these different lineages which students may feel drawn toward investigating for themselves.

We aim to offer participants a foundational understanding of yoga philosophy which opens their minds to the endlessly expansive realms of insight in the form of both ancient and modern lineages of yoga.

The Art of Teaching

The art of teaching yoga is a practice unto itself and requires a clear and open voice, strong knowledge of alignment & breath, creative sequencing, knowledge of modification and adjustment, and the ability to hold a transformative space.

Swara Yoga Academy is unique in the way that we approach the teaching of sequencing. We do not deliver you ‘cut and dry’ asana sequences because we feel that set sequences inhibit your ability to be spontaneous and respond to the needs of your students.

We believe that teachers need to understand the energetic qualities of each posture, and how to arrange their own sequences so that a class flows in an energetic pattern which is intelligently balanced. Every Swara Yoga class is different, but every class follows the same energetic map. It is this map that we will share with you, so that your teaching will be an innovative exploration which evolves over time and which may be inclusive of practices learned from other teachers as well. Through this approach, you will start to understand the practice of asana in profound new ways.
