The Sanctuary Thailand
Haad Tien Beach, Ko Phangan Island
The Vibe
Haad Tien Bay has been a magnet for yoga people for over 20 years. Randall, who is Director of Swara Yoga Academy, helped start the yoga programme at the Sanctuary and maintained it for many years.
The feeling on the bay is very relaxed. The are no streets, few cars and only 1 shop. There are restaurants scattered around the 3 bay area.
It is both remote and comfortable and a perfect place for yoga. The tourist and local Thai people are very friendly and open. It is a very safe place for women, and anyone can walk around at any time of night or day without fear of assault or harassment. There are yoga practitioners all around but we do have a weekly party where people can go and dance if they wish.
BEaches
We have 3 pristine beaches all within 10 minutes walk from The Sanctuary. Each are unique in their beauty and their general feeling. Haad Yuan is a classic Thai beach, with soft sand, set in a beautiful bay, fringed with coconut palms and dramatic rocks.
Haad Tien, where the Sanctuary is, is a small, quiet beach with a coral reef and swimming platform. The Sanctuary is the only resort on the beach on Haad Tien,
Haad Why Nam beach is a small quiet bay. There is only 1 small resort on this bay and they cater to travellers and beach bums. There is often music on the beach in the late afternoons and fires in the evenings.
Our Yoga Hall
The yoga hall at The Sanctuary is a beautiful hall surrounded by the Thai forest. There are no walls. The hall is, however, protected by mosquito nets, so there is no fear of creatures coming in to disturb us.
The hall is clean and airy and all mats, blocks and straps are provided, so you don’t need to bring your mat unless you want to.
Getting to the Sanctuary Thailand
Flying to Ko Samui
You can easily fly to Ko Samui Island from Bangkok or a few other destinations. From there, you take the Haad Rin Queen Ferry from Big Buddha Pier (10 minutes from the airport). When you arrive on Ko Phangan Island in Haad Rin Town, you take a boat taxi to The Sanctuary, Haad Tien Beach. Flying to Ko Samui is the most costly of the ways to get to the island.
Flying to Suratthani
It is much cheaper to fly to Suratthani on the mainland and then take a bus and ferry to Ko Phangan. This takes longer but is faster than bus or train. Thai transportation is efficient and comfortable, but there are quite a few modes of transportation involved if you fly to Suratthani.
Bus or Train
From Bangkok, you can get a ‘joint ticket’ to Ko Phangan Island. You will be effortlessly shown where to go by the Thais. This is an easy way and cheap but takes about 18 hours to get all the way to the Sanctuary.
