Enter the Eternal Wisdom
The practice of yoga is what is called a ‘vidya’. Vidya means timeless wisdom. The yoga is a specific style and approach to this eternal wisdom. Eternal wisdom is something that applies to all people regardless of our place in time, station in life, or nationality. It is an approach to life that can uplift us, clarify our goals and help us to live the best we can with what we have.
To embrace a vidya such as yoga is to enter into the stream of timeless wisdom. It is a guide to every moment in our lives, supporting us and helping us to make good decisions about what to do and when to do it. There are many such vidyas around the world; yoga is simply one flavor of wisdom, a specific approach. Other types of vidyas from Indian traditions include such things as astrology, the system of Ayurveda, Vedanta philosophy and many more.
Fortunately for us, yoga is a very accessible type of timeless wisdom. Yoga has spread its wings and now is practiced around the world in many forms and styles. This is miraculous spread of yoga is precisely due to the fact that it is a vidya; the lessons learned through yoga can be harvested regardless of your location or station.
For example, yoga teaches that establishing our center is essential to our health and emotional and mental well-being. These lessons are learned (at first) through the asana. We search for our center so we can comfortably do the balance poses and other postures. Establishing our physical center helps us to learn our energetic and emotional center. When we are grounded in our center, we have the clarity to act and react in a more balanced and healthy way.
Being centered is beneficial to all people, for everyone acts and reacts in their way. Some base their actions on memories of the past and previous conditioning, or imagination or on limited beliefs. When our reactions source from somewhere other than our center, from somewhere that is not built on a vidya, then our decisions are often not healthy or balanced. This causes problems in our life which need to be addressed.
When we enter into the deeper yoga knowledge, we gradually gain more insight into feelings and behavior. We get to know ourselves better and can, with wisdom and practice, temper our destructive patterns and eventually align ourselves with what is true and lasting. These things cannot be learned in an instant; they take cultivation, time and practice. When we commit ourselves to yoga and maintain regular connection with its wisdom, we gradually change and transform into a higher and more refined version of ourselves.
By staying with the yoga over time, we find ourselves changing in surprising ways, often without our direct awareness. We start to act in ways that were different to our previous approaches. It becomes apparent that the yoga is actually working and that the system of transformation that yoga is, really works.
To do this, however, is an effort. One must take the plunge and really commit energy and time to learning and practicing yoga. The best way to gain vidya is to enter upon study with yogis who are living and practicing this timeless way themselves. If you are lucky, you have already discovered a group of teachers who can share this with you.
