Full Moon in Aquarius: The Fortnight of the Ancestors

 In Astrology

Greetings All!

This Full moon will culminate on September 14th at 10:02 am ISD in the sign of Aquarius.  This Full moon is also the fortnight called Pitri Paksha, the annual 15 day worship of our ancestors.  In India this is an elaborate ritual to ensure that the soul of the departed has gone to ‘heaven’.  It is also seen as a protective practice for the living relatives of that person.

The departed ancestor is typically propitiated on the lunar day that correlates with their passing, though there are particular days for different situations.  For example, those who have passed this last year are remembered on the 4th and 5th day of this lunar cycle, September 18th and 19th here in India.  This is when the Moon is in the lunar house of Bharani, which is particularly associated with the lord of death and the transformation and rebirth process.

I would suggest to any of you that feel inclined, or particularly anyone who I have mentioned ancestral issues to, to do a small offering over these next 15 days.  According to the laws of Vedic culture, we can not perform full rites to the ancestors while our parents are still alive.  But a small offering or remembrance is very appropriate and significant during this time.  In western culture this may look like a visit to the grave or a special place of a departed loved one.  No matter how it is done it is a potent time to remember those who have passed.

In other astrological news, Mercury and Venus have recently moved into Virgo.  This combination of exalted Mercury and debilitated Venus can make us tend to overanalyze our emotions. Virgo is the sign of the analytical and critical mind, which inhibits the creative sensuality of Venus.  While Mercury gets a good boost for analytical thinking and intellectual pursuits this month, we should be careful that Mercury’s critical quality does not prevail in our relationships.  Venus in Virgo has the tendency to intellectualize rather than feel our emotions, which inhibits the free flow of creative energy and love of Venus.  This combination will stay strong through the end of September, and get hotter when Sun and later Mars move in to join this combination.

After this fortnight cycle starts the very celebrated Navaratri, the nine nights of the Goddess Durga.

Do be in touch if you would like more guidance on Pitri Paksha or any other astrological happening.

Love and Blessings,
